Principles of ions exchanging
Marine Autocontrol Water Softener is designed and
manufactured according to latest technology,It’s controlled by time brine
refill and meter setting procedure, can work continuous 24 hours around . It
has two resin tanks, one work the other one stand by. and regeneration.
Hardness of water consists of those ions (mainly Calcium and Magnesium)
which can give rise to scaling.
Softening is attained by the replacement of hardness ions with Sodium ones
(which have no scaling capacity) by means of ion exchangers ( resin). As
soon as the exchanger has exhausted its exchange capacity, it becomes
necessary to regenerate it. This is attained by having a solution of Sodium
chloride (table salt) percolate through the mass of resin.
The service-regeneration cycle is automatically effected by softeners which
essentially consist of a pressure tank (housing the exchanger bed) and a
brine tank.
Schematically, the exchanger can be considered as a long organic
molecule (undissolvable in water and food-grade) with a large number of
Sodium (Na) ions bound to it. As the resin, however, has a higher chemical
affinity to Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg) ions, it follows that it has a
natural capacity for releasing Sodium ions.
In the regeneration step there is a very high concentration of Sodium ions
and as a result of its mass, the resin is forced to release Calcium and
Magnesium ions thus going back to the original Sodium form and therefore
restoring the exchange capacity.
